Show off or science?
In beauty, “sky is the limit”. Many of us will do anything for great skin, the perfect profile, or the dream mane. Each culture has its own criteria of beauty and each wallet finds its account there. I also read an article recently where a renowned American surgeon charged between 50k and 200k for a facelift. I am not surprised, without being convinced that it is necessary to pay such a sum to look good!
I also notice that we live in an era where showing off is part of the game: Who has never succumbed to the seductive power of commercial advertisements promising earth and world? I admit that I got caught a few times and that made me a skeptical and a little disenchanted buyer. Whether it’s the miracle creams or devices sold on TV or Instagram; it’s the new beauty lottery of sorts: Am I willing to pay $39.99 for a miraculous lifting cream? And… Am I ready to LOSE $39.99 if the cream doesn’t work? What if it worked? And vlan, we go to the checkout in one click.
So how do you get there?
I say it often and repeat it; it is more prudent to rely on science, clinical studies and professionals when it comes time to embark on aesthetic medicine. Whether for a cabin treatment or a home care routine. There are indeed undeniable effective combos. In nutrition, for example, we know the beneficial effect of combining Vitamin D and Calcium or Vitamin C and iron. In aesthetic medicine, certain ingredients or treatments put together have superior effectiveness when combined. This is what I call the synergistic effect. There are tons of winning combinations when it comes to choosing the right treatment for you. The important thing is to understand that the face must be treated in several of these aspects!
The main areas of interest when it comes to addressing the face are:
- The skin: its texture, color, wrinkles and fine lines
- Sagging skin: Elasticity, downward static wrinkles like nasal folds and jowls
- Loss of volume and structure: cheeks, temples, chin and jawline
Each category must be addressed separately and will need special care!
In aesthetic medicine, combos of different technologies often give a synergistic effect and are often necessary in order to treat the face from all angles. By maximizing the power of the combination, we are therefore able to treat several conditions related to aging.
Here are some examples of treatment combinations that have proven effective based on our clinical observations over time.
Peeling + Microneedling + Serums
The treatment: The gentle enzymatic peel prepares the skin by getting rid of dead skin cells while removing a small layer of the epidermis. This allows the microneedling to treat the skin a little deeper and the serums to penetrate deeper for better absorption. A winning combo every time! As for serums, combos are also in the game, whether it’s a personalized cocktail made from key ingredients like vitamin C for its antioxidant powers, hyaluronic acid for intense hydration and a little neuromodulators to tighten pores or be it a signature cocktail such as the NCTF boost including vitamins A, C, peptides and amino acids for unparalleled luminosity. The choices are endless! The key is to combine ingredients proven to be effective in this treatment.
We recommend a series of 3 treatments every 2 weeks for maximum effect.
Regions: face, neck and/or décolletage
Areas of interest: skin and sagging skin
Healing: expect 24-48 hours of redness and sunburn-like warmth. Some people will peel for 2-3 days following treatment. It is important to moisturize the skin well, not to exfoliate it or apply abrasive creams like retinol for at least 5 days.
Neuromodulators + HA mesotherapy
The treatment: These are micro injections of neuromodulators such as Botox, Dysport, Nuceiva or Xeomin specially prepared for injections into the dermis for a temporary tightening effect. Combined with microinjections of fine hyaluronic acid which will take care of maximizing the hydration of the skin in addition to contributing to the production of new collagen. A very effective but temporary tightening and moisturizing combo, we are talking here about an effect of 2 to 4 months in general for a single treatment and 9 to 12 months with a series of 3 to 4 annual treatments.
Areas treated: crow’s feet wrinkles, cheek wrinkles, perioral area and neck
Areas of Interest: Skin + Sagging Skin
Healing: Small bumps similar to mosquito bites may be visible a few hours after treatment. In rare cases they can appear for up to 48 hours but always end up resolving. Small bruises may also appear the day after treatment. They fade quickly in the following days. We can go about our daily business the next day (except for the eye area where healing can be slower). Patience is required for this treatment because the maximum effects are visible 2 weeks after the treatment! Despite the wait, this treatment is definitely worth it!
Photorejuvenation IPL + Laser Clearlift
The treatment: IPL photorejuvenation is THE treatment of choice to lighten the complexion. It treats diffuse redness such as rosacea as well as pigment spots. It has been around for over 20 years and its popularity is only growing. Bonuses; it helps to give a beautiful luminosity to the skin and helps to tighten the pores. The clearlift is a painless treatment that stimulates the collagen of the dermis. It is very popular for effectively tightening and sagging skin on eyelids, face and neck safely. It can also, depending on your specific needs, work on the texture of the skin including pores, fine lines and scars. As a combo, these two treatments have a synergistic effect on the production of your own collagen and work together on all aspects of the skin and its aging… a truly effective duo!
We recommend a series of 3 to 6 treatments every 3 weeks depending on your specific needs.
Areas treated: full face including eye area (clear lift only) and/or neck and décolleté
Areas of Interest: Skin + Sagging Skin
Healing: Very slight swelling and sunburn-like redness may be visible the day of treatment but should not interfere with your daily activities. Dark micro crusts will be visible the next day where there were pigment spots, they will disappear in the week following the treatment. Adequate hydration is recommended and especially no exfoliation. It is important to let the skin heal at its own pace. In addition, you can apply foundation the next morning. An incognito treatment!
Fillers + biostimulants
There are 2 types of fillers. The most popular are those made with hyaluronic acid such as Restylane, Juvederm, Teosyal and Revanesse and Belotero to name the main ones approved by Health Canada. These filling agents have the function of revolumizing the face while restructuring its contours for a rejuvenated appearance. They can therefore be injected into the skin or just above the bone structure to restore a healthy glow to the face. Hyaluronic acid also allows the skin to rehydrate itself since it can absorb up to 1000 times its weight in water. Although the results are temporary, the injected hyaluronic acid also stimulated the production of new collagen and will have stopped time when it is present in your skin. To maximize the effects of Hyaluronic Acid in the long term, it is important to treat the skin and deeper structures with biostomulants such as PRP, Radiesse or Sculptra. These agents act minimally as volumizers. Their great performance is rather at the level of stimulation of new cells and new collagen for a long-term anti-aging effect. A combination of these two injection techniques will ensure longer lasting results and skin firmness that fillers alone cannot guarantee. Since the neck is a particularly difficult area to treat, biostimulants are an excellent option for long-term rejuvenation. On the other hand, you have to be patient because this category of treatment does not have an immediate “wow” effect like what we notice with hyaluronic acid.
Areas treated: full face and neck
Areas of interest: sagging skin + loss of volume and bone density
Healing: Redness, swelling and bruising are most common and can last up to 2 weeks. For the area around the eyes, healing may be slower and swelling may last up to 1 month in very rare cases. We can still start a social life again within 48 hours of the injections (with a little camouflage if necessary). Cold water compresses and arnica can help soothe the discomfort caused by the injections, but we consider this treatment to be relatively easy to fit into a busy schedule!
In 2022, there are countless combinations of treatments and as many technologies on the market. Just keep in mind that each category of the face should eventually be treated as part of a comprehensive anti-aging plan. For the rest, it is up to us, the medical aesthetic professionals, to guide you through an annual plan structured according to your needs and your budget!
